Social Networking Sites

Facebook has always been characterized by a strong presence of family and friends and strong focus on memories such as pictures and videos of events. You can chat with your "Friends" or poke them or wave at them. On the whole it seems more fun. Though young people made it famous, it seems the older folks have taken over and made it their own. Though young adults may still have a Facebook account they prefer to actively use Instagram or SnapChat because it allows them the privacy they want to have with friends that are their own age. I have neither of latter at the moment so I will not be saying much about them. Twitter started out as a more serious platform to share thoughts and views and to promote discussion about news and current events. Twitter later provided the feature of sharing pics to diversify capability and keep customer bases interested and growing. There's great importance placed on what's trending and getting involved by chiming in.

LinkedIn feels less pleasure-oriented because they mean business. If you want to be successful you need to network and make contacts wherever you can. Graduation pictures, work anniversaries, career and interview tips and direct messaging about job opportunities are key aspects of having a LinkedIn account. Instead of asking how you feel like Facebook does, LinkedIn will prompt you to write an article instead. Professionalism is the goal here.

Another, not-so-popular, social networking site is Google +. The home screen is less overwhelming than all the above-mentioned sites but the features are as generic as any other social networking site. One aspect of note is the absence of ads compared to most other sites though. Most of the space is dedicated to the posts and the posts themselves emphasize images more profoundly.

  1. I would say Google+ is more advanced and content oriented than Facebook. The reason why Facebook is more successful, however, is the "networking effect". Basically, people use the social network which their friends are using. Facebook has recently acquired a lot of other social networking sites, one of which is instagram. Social networking is used as a dating platform as well with sites such as MeetMe and Tinder. It's amazing though, how freely people share content and information about themselves knowing that they are providing free information for marketing. Albeit the privacy concerns, social networking has made the world a smaller place. I'm undecided on whether that is a good or bad thing.

  2. It's always going to depend on who you ask. It's a little bit of both. Either way you won't be able to stop it!
